CAHME accreditation is CAHME's programmatic review of healthcare management education programs against the 2026 CAHME Accreditation Standards and Criteria. This page is for universities that sponsor a graduate healthcare management program, such as an MHA, and are seeking initial accreditation or aligning an existing program with the 2026 standards. Integral Healthcare Solutions (IHS) builds the governance documents and evidence for CAHME accreditation; your faculty own the curriculum and competencies.

What is CAHME accreditation?
CAHME accredits a program after it moves through eligibility, candidacy, a self-study and a site visit, followed by a decision of the CAHME Board. The governing text is the "2026 CAHME Accreditation Standards and Criteria," approved by the CAHME Board of Directors on February 18, 2026 (Rev. 2/18/2026) (CAHME, 2026 Standards). It is organized into five standards: Program Development, Operations and Sustainment; Competency Model; Curriculum; Student Success; and Faculty.
Two criteria show the kind of evidence the standards ask for. Criterion 1.1: "The program will have statements of mission, vision, and values and demonstrate they guide the program's design, evaluation of effectiveness, and strategic initiatives." Criterion 2.1: "The program will develop, adopt, or adapt and implement a competency model that is industry relevant and prepares students for post graduate employment outcomes" (CAHME, 2026 Standards). CAHME lists the exhibits expected for each criterion on its 2026 Standards Hub.
Candidacy comes before accreditation and is not the same thing. CAHME states: "Candidacy status does not indicate an accredited status, nor does it guarantee eventual accreditation" (CAHME, Candidacy Process).
Who needs it and what triggers it
The buyers are universities and schools that sponsor graduate healthcare management programs. The pages we reviewed present CAHME accreditation as a voluntary program choice. These events start the work:
- A decision to pursue accreditation. "The first step to becoming CAHME Accredited is submitting an Eligibility statement" through the CAHME Accreditation Management Portal (CAMP), and "CAHME will respond regarding acceptance of your application within 7-14 business days" (CAHME, Getting Started).
- The move to candidacy. "The time between Eligibility statement acceptance and Candidacy application submission is typically 5 months" (CAHME, Getting Started).
- The standards change. "Candidacy applications submitted after March 1, 2026 will be on the new 2026 Standards for Accreditation" (CAHME, Candidacy Process). The pages we reviewed do not say when already-accredited programs move to the 2026 standards.
- A site visit date. "The program is required complete the Site Visit Readiness Checklist 12 weeks prior to the site visit," and "The Self-Study must be submitted within CAMP 8 weeks prior to the scheduled site visit" (CAHME, Getting Started).
After the visit, CAHME states that "The time from the site visit to to a final Board decision on accreditation is about 6 months" (CAHME, Getting Started).
How IHS helps
CAHME is direct on this point: "CAHME DOES NOT REQUIRE OR RECOMMEND PROGRAMS HIRE CONSULTANTS" (CAHME, Consultants). A program can complete the process on its own. Where a program brings in outside help, IHS works through the standards with its team:
- A gap assessment of the program against the 2026 CAHME Accreditation Standards and Criteria, using questionnaires on governance, the competency model, stakeholder input and assessment.
- Document and evidence mapping: a crosswalk from each criterion and its Standards Hub exhibits to the program record that meets it.
- Drafting: governance documentation, competency mapping records and stakeholder feedback workflows, written for your academic leaders to review and approve.
- Self-study support, with evidence organized against the crosswalk and planned backward from the CAMP submission date.
- A mock review of the self-study before the program submits it, and readiness support ahead of the site visit.
What you supply: the program's records, its competency model, assessment data, and the academic leaders who own curriculum and competencies.
The limit: curriculum and competency definitions belong to your faculty. IHS does not set them. What IHS brings is its process: gap assessment, evidence mapping and mock review against the governing text. The program submits everything to CAHME itself.
What to have ready
This is the list we would ask for first, each item tied to what CAHME publishes.
- Statements of mission, vision and values, with evidence that they guide program design, evaluation of effectiveness and strategic initiatives (Criterion 1.1, 2026 Standards, Rev. 2/18/2026).
- The competency model the program has developed, adopted or adapted, and how it is implemented (Criterion 2.1, 2026 Standards, Rev. 2/18/2026).
- An owner for each of the five standards: Program Development, Operations and Sustainment; Competency Model; Curriculum; Student Success; Faculty (2026 Standards).
- The exhibit list for each criterion from the CAHME 2026 Standards Hub, with a note of where each exhibit lives today.
- A free CAMP account and a draft Eligibility statement (CAHME, Getting Started).
- The eligibility requirements in CAHME's Self-Study Handbook, which the Getting Started page names as their source (CAHME, Getting Started).
- A calendar working back from the site visit: the Site Visit Readiness Checklist at 12 weeks, the Self-Study in CAMP at 8 weeks (CAHME, Getting Started).
- University hosting arrangements for a site visit that "typically lasts 3 days" (CAHME, Getting Started).
- Budget lines for CAHME's eligibility, candidacy, initiation and annual fees (CAHME, FY 2026 & FY 2027 Fee Schedule).
If most of this is in place, the introductory call is the place to start.
How it compares
| Route | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| CAHME accreditation | Programmatic accreditation under the 2026 CAHME Accreditation Standards and Criteria, with candidacy, a self-study and a site visit that typically lasts 3 days (CAHME). |
| AUPHA Undergraduate Certification | For bachelor's programs. AUPHA states: "Certification, while similar in process and standards, differs from accreditation in that it does not require a site visit" (AUPHA). |
| CEPH accreditation | For programs whose degree is public health rather than health administration. CEPH describes itself as "An independent agency established to accredit schools of public health, and public health programs outside schools of public health" (CEPH). |
| AACSB with CAHME | CAHME's site lists "AACSB and CAHME Joint Site Visits" as an accreditation topic (CAHME, Accreditation). We have not reviewed how the joint arrangement works. |
Each route is run by a different body with its own scope. This page does not recommend one over another.

What this is not
- IHS is not an accrediting body and does not grant, influence or predict a CAHME Board decision.
- IHS does not submit the Eligibility statement, candidacy application or self-study to CAHME, or correspond with CAHME for the program. IHS drafts; the program submits.
- This page is not academic or legal advice. Curriculum and competency definitions belong to your faculty.
Frequently asked questions
What is CAHME accreditation and which programs does it cover?
CAHME accreditation is a programmatic review of healthcare management education programs against the 2026 CAHME Accreditation Standards and Criteria, approved February 18, 2026. The standards cover program development and operations, the competency model, curriculum, student success and faculty. CAHME's Getting Started page points to its Self-Study Handbook for eligibility requirements.
How long does it take a new MHA program to get CAHME accredited?
CAHME does not publish a single end-to-end figure on the pages we reviewed. It responds to an Eligibility statement within 7-14 business days, and candidacy submission typically follows eligibility acceptance by about 5 months. Site visits are held in the fall or spring following the self-study year, and the Board decision comes about 6 months after the visit.
What are the steps from the Eligibility statement to candidacy to the site visit?
A program registers for a free CAMP account and submits an Eligibility statement. After acceptance it prepares a candidacy application, then completes a self-study. It completes the Site Visit Readiness Checklist 12 weeks before the visit and submits the Self-Study in CAMP 8 weeks before it.
How much does CAHME accreditation cost, including candidacy and initiation fees?
CAHME's FY 2026 and FY 2027 schedule lists an Eligibility Fee of $2,650, a Candidacy Application Fee of $5,700, a Candidacy Annual Fee of $3,050 and an Initiation Fee of $10,150 for programs seeking initial accreditation. Accredited programs pay an annual base fee from $6,100 to $7,950 by enrollment, plus $6.00 per student over 500, and site visitor travel is invoiced as expensed. Verify current fees with CAHME.
What is a CAHME competency model?
Criterion 2.1 of the 2026 standards states that the program will develop, adopt, or adapt and implement a competency model that is industry relevant and prepares students for post graduate employment outcomes. CAHME lists the exhibits for each criterion on its 2026 Standards Hub. The model itself is set by your faculty.
What is the difference between CAHME candidacy and CAHME accreditation?
CAHME describes the Candidate designation as a program's voluntary commitment to a systematic plan of quality enhancement so that accreditation is a feasible objective. It states that candidacy status does not indicate an accredited status and does not guarantee eventual accreditation.
When are CAHME candidacy applications due?
Two CAHME pages we reviewed give different dates. The Candidacy Process page says March 1 or October 1; the Getting Started page says October 15 or February 15. Confirm the current date on CAHME's site before planning. Applications submitted after March 1, 2026 are reviewed on the 2026 standards.
CAHME, AUPHA certification or CEPH: which applies to our program?
They cover different programs. AUPHA certification is for bachelor's programs and, in AUPHA's words, does not require a site visit. CEPH accredits schools and programs of public health. CAHME accredits healthcare management education programs; the choice belongs to your institution.
Does CAHME require us to hire a consultant?
No. CAHME's consultants page states that CAHME does not require or recommend programs hire consultants. A program can complete the process on its own.
